Preparing for your visit

CT scan

Before your CT scan

Little preparation is needed, and you can eat, sleep and take your medication as normal unless your doctor says otherwise. If your scan uses contrast dye, don't eat or drink for 4 hours before. If you're having sedation, don't for 6 hours.

ECG

Before your ECG

Little preparation is needed. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and leave jewellery at home. Remove your phone, smartwatch and other electronic devices, as they can interfere with the readings. Your legs will need to be uncovered, and you may be asked to wear a gown.

Digital X-ray

Before your X-ray

Little preparation is needed. Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal zips or buttons, and leave jewellery at home, as metal can show up on the image. Tell us if you are or might be pregnant. You may be asked to wear a gown.

Ultrasound

Before your ultrasound

For a pregnancy or pelvic scan, drink water and don't go to the toilet until afterwards. For a liver or gallbladder scan, don't eat or drink for several hours before. You may be asked to wear a gown. Most scans take 15 to 45 minutes.
